The Matriarch and Me A Ride in a Car
A while ago I mentioned that I had never been to the Grand Canyon. Chris said, “Mom, Really?” Not that I had never traveled. I’d been to a number of countries in Europe and to many states in the US including those in the four corners of the country.
Several books play a part in this story. “A Walk in the Park” by Kevin Fedarko is a terrific adventure about an incredible hike through the Grand Canyon. (We will go to, not through.) Three books tell about walking the Ancient Silk Road from Istanbul to Xian, China. One book is about the pilgrimage through Spain, the Camino del Compostela de Santiago. Okay, let’s travel. No long walks though. A solid car driven by Christine to our great national park.
And so our idea grew. We talked. Each made suggestions. First, we’ll go to Asheville, NC. A straight shot from Cleveland. Visit Joe and Bonnie. And then Barbara and Dan in Atlanta. Oh wait. First, Meggy and David in Charlotte. And then . . . All of a sudden the itinerary covers over a month and goes from October 23 to the day before Thanksgiving. A trip. A pilgrimage. An adventure.
