Yesteday was Cortez, Colorado. Now we are in Moab, Utah. But before we got here, We went to Mesa Verde National Park. WOW. I am so glad that Judy Z suggested it. Amazing, incredible, astounding. There is a good web of roads that take you to very interesting archeological Pueblo dwellings as well as museums of Pueblo pottery and artifacts.
On these roads, I kept swiveling my head to look at the mountains and BIG hills. These last often hewn in half to make room for the road. As well, for effect, snow lies on the shaded sides. The temperature was a comfortable 50 degrees. But the sun was shining and hot. So the snow was surprising.
After we left Mesa Verde, we still had at least two more hours of driving. And the wow factor didn’t stop. Again as the road turned, it showed more amazing views of low mountains, large hills in pink / orange colors studded with clumps of green shrubs and / or rocks of all sizes.
All the way into Moab.
We’ve been listening to “Desert Solitaire” by Edward Abbey. A perfect book for our trip. Or for anyone. He’s a park ranger situated in Arches National Park in the late 1960s. Somewhat prescient, irreverent, and teller of tales in the canyon lands.
Tomorrow we go to Arches National Park.
